The Savage 220 is a bolt-action slug gun in 20 gauge, with a 22-inch button-rifled barrel, a 3-inch chamber and a detachable box magazine holding two rounds plus one chambered. The receiver is drilled and tapped and comes with a one-piece scope rail, the trigger is Savage's user-adjustable AccuTrigger, and the synthetic AccuStock uses AccuFit to tailor the fit. It weighs 7.5 pounds, measures 43 inches, has a 13.75-inch length of pull, a blue/black finish and an oversized bolt handle.

For a New Jersey deer hunter this is close to purpose-built. The state allows only shotguns, muzzleloaders and bows for deer, and the 220's 20-gauge bore and 2+1 capacity sit within the rules as delivered, without a plug. Put a scope on the rail, find the slug it shoots best, and it is ready for the Six-Day Firearm season of December 7-12 and the Permit Shotgun dates set for each Deer Management Zone.
