The 590A1 is Mossberg's heavy-barrel pump gun: a 12 gauge with a 20-inch cylinder-bore barrel, 3-inch chamber, Parkerized metal and a synthetic stock. The tube holds eight shells plus one in the chamber. Ghost ring sights sit on the receiver, the tang safety works from either side, and the gun weighs 7.25 pounds at 41.75 inches overall with a 14.5-inch length of pull.

Mossberg built this configuration for security and defensive work, and that is where it fits: the thick barrel, Parkerized finish and ghost rings are chosen for hard use rather than a day in the uplands. The cylinder bore and 3-inch chamber will pass slugs and buckshot, so a New Jersey owner who plugs the magazine down to three shells can also carry it during the shotgun deer seasons, but the primary job is a home shotgun that will take years of handling.
