A 1950s Hawthorne M150B youth shotgun in .410, with no serial number. The 24-inch barrel is bored Improved Modified and chambered for 3-inch shells; the bore is excellent. It is a bolt-action field gun with a blued finish and a wood stock cut to a short 13.75-inch pull. Minor handling marks on finish and stock, and the supplier rates it very good overall.
Youth-sized .410 bolt guns are how a lot of shooters started, and this one still fits that role: short stock, light recoil, one deliberate shot at a time. In New Jersey the .410 is outside the 10-to-20 gauge range used for deer, so it stays a small-game and introduction gun. The 3-inch chamber accepts the heavier .410 loads, and the Improved Modified bore gives a mid-range pattern that is forgiving for a new shooter at the pattern board or on squirrels.
