A Belgian-built Francotte boxlock, serial 22712, dating to around 1895 and supplied through Von Lengerke & Detmold, the maker's New York agents. It is a 12 gauge double with 30-inch Damascus tubes, 2 3/4-inch chambers and fixed chokes that both measure .024. Two triggers, extractors, a safety that sets itself when the gun opens, and a Greener cross bolt complete the action. The stock is a straight-hand walnut piece with checkering, 14 1/2 inches to a horn butt plate, dropping 1 1/2 to 2 3/8 inches.
The Damascus shows pleasing figure and the frame carries restrained engraving. Condition is reported as very good: the gun is tight and on face with excellent bores, and it travels in its leather case. For a New Jersey collector this is a late-1800s double whose sales history runs through the New York trade, and most owners of a Damascus gun of this age will keep it for the cabinet rather than the field.
