The Escort SDX12 Tactical is a gas-operated 12 gauge semi-automatic built on an 18-inch chrome-plated steel barrel with a 3-inch chamber. The upper receiver is a detachable alloy unit and the lower is polymer; the fixed synthetic stock has an integrated pistol grip, an elevation-adjustable comb and a soft rubber butt pad. It weighs 8.2 pounds, measures 39 inches overall, and ships with three magazines: two five-round boxes and a two-round box that stows in the buttstock. The removable carry handle holds an adjustable rear sight, the front sight adjusts too, and Picatinny rails on the receiver and ThermoDefend forend take accessories.

Three magazines out of the box is the SDX12's main argument: leave the two-round box in the stock as a spare and run the five-rounders for training. Treat it as a home-defense and range shotgun in New Jersey; the state limits deer shotguns to three shells, which is not what this layout is built for. The adjustable comb and rubber pad make long practice sessions comfortable.
