Winchester Super X rifled slugs in the 3-inch 12-gauge shell are a smoothbore deer load, packed five to a box. The spec sheet lists a 1.1-ounce lead slug, while Winchester's own copy calls it a 1-ounce slug; either way the rifling is cast into the lead itself so it flies true from a smoothbore barrel, and the hull carries a brass head.

New Jersey deer hunting is shotgun, muzzleloader and bow only, and the shotgun rules call for slugs or buckshot from a 10-to-20-gauge gun holding no more than three shells. A 3-inch slug needs a 3-inch or longer chamber, so check the barrel stamp before buying for an older gun. Sight in a few boxes ahead of the Six-Day Firearm season on December 7-12 or your zone's Permit Shotgun dates, and keep the same lot for the hunt.
